The Creative Art of Problem Solving.
Sticking
Working diligently with focus to resolve a problem takes focus and concentration. Dealing with the quantitative tasks can be achieved through segments of time and energy directed specifically towards a solution.
The types of tasks which are tackled and handled fairly straightforwardly in this manner fall under the rubric of quantifiable:
• balancing a checkbook
• paying bills
• measuring cooking ingredients
• changing engine oil
By Sticking to what’s needed to be accomplished, the likelihood of getting whatever it is done, will be good.
Writing a newspaper of web-posted column, preparing a talk, designing the table layout for a dinner party, composing a song, developing a screenplay–the pathways of such creative endeavors are less straightforward.
They often require research into the subject and backstory to include gathering the ‘knowns’ and figuring out which of the unknowns to include.
Developing the story and choosing the words to tell the story. Making it come together in a way that is exciting, interesting, compelling, and memorable.
UnStuck
Problem-solvers tell of doing something completely different and (seemingly) unrelated to finding the answer to a problem.
What to do?
Go for a bike ride along the beach, a run, a hike in the hills, a walk downtown, or a swim in the lake.
Do some yoga. Dance.
Play a song. Sing a song.
Go to a movie.
Feed the ducks.
Listen to music.
Tend to the garden.
Make some soup.
Attend a presentation.
Visit a museum.
Almost anything that is different from what you have been doing
and that you like to do and maybe rarely do.
Or that you have yet to do.
Change the venue.
‘Shake it up.’
Shift the perspective.
Distract yourself.
By doing something else, by ‘letting it go’ and directing your mind elsewhere, new synapses/connections may break loose and come together in new ways. The answers or directions or opening up of a different pathway can often more readily occur.
You can return to your earlier endeavor REfreshed and REnewed.

Stuck?
How this gets done effectively isn’t always the easiest to do or to explain how it gets done.
Lots of writes, re-writes, deletes, and do-overs are tried– some more successfully than others.
Developing an artistic creation–making ‘something’ from ‘nothing’ takes on its unique character. Maybe in one, rather lengthy, uninterrupted session where the disparate pieces coalesce and the creator is pleased and satisfied with the results.
But along the way, bumps or obstacles, unevenness and blockages can occur.
They just do.
And what to do?
When the words aren’t coming, the picture doesn’t look right.
When that shape is too ‘this’ or too ‘that’.
What to do?
And the answers just aren’t coming, either.
Take a breather. Breathe. Do something entirely different that is enjoyable & focuses your mind’s thoughts elsewhere.
After some time, return to your stuckplace.
It’s likely you’ll find yourself Unstuck!

Volumes
Pay attention as you take the turns along winding Mountain Drive in the Santa Barbara foothills. Looking towards the Pacific you can see the ‘Book House’ currently being built. While the pages can’t be turned, the covers of the staggered pile of books have the titles written on the spines.
What’s inside the books between the pages?
Accessible Territory
When driving somewhere alone, you might find that your thoughts figure out problems, or explore issues that you just don’t at other times. When daily distractions, as well as the presence of another person, are not dominating the brainwaves, the mind more easily ventures into easily accessible territory
& can tend to address things in a very creative, free-flowing manner.
